The Addiction of Golf

Have you ever wondered why golf is such an addictive sport? Is it the great outdoors? The beer cart? Mans challenge against the game? The reasons are different for each person who avidly plays the game. The one sure thing is that there are more fanatical golfers than there are avid players of any other sport.

The beauty of the game cannot be stated with one sentence. There are many different factors that make the game of golf so special. Not only can the recreational golfer play some of the same courses as the pros, but every fan can get close to the best players in the world and watch them do what they do best: play golf.

On paper, the game is simple. Hit the ball as close to the hole and try to get it in with the least amount of stokes. The hard part is putting into action this very thing. Sometimes your swing is off. Sometimes the wind is too strong. Other times you just cant get your putting down. All these factors present a challenge where each time you play, you are playing against your most recent score.

Golf represents a challenge of the golfer against his last game, making the game so addictive. Each new round is another chance to better your last score. It is a new day, a new attempt to better. Each time you play is a new time to convince yourself that you can break 100, 90, or 80. The magical thing is that is doesnt matter if your playing partner is shooting in the low 80s and you are playing near the 100 mark. It is you against you and this is what keeps you coming back for more and more.

As if this were not enough, there is always the time where you play a terrible round of golf but somehow manage to come down the 18th hole with an incredible drive, a great second shot, and a nice two putt for par or birdie. Suddenly the last 17 holes disappear from your memory and you want to go out again right away. You are helpless against this uncontrollable force.

Many have simply accepted that golf is addictive. The majority of golfers simply consider golf their hobby and thats all there is to it. This is the best route because fighting it only leads to guilt and higher scores. Keep your mind free of these thoughts and just go out and enjoy your rounds.
